St George Local Area

St George is the hub of the Balonne Shire and is situated on the beautiful Balonne River downstream of Beardmore Dam which is the northern catchment area of the Murray Darling Basin system in southern central Queensland. 

Things to do in St George

The Balonne River is an ideal spot to exercise, rest,  or socialise, whether it be walking, skiing, boating, fishing, swimming or a social get together. The river comes to life for the yearly “Battle of the Balonne” Triathlon,  the  “River Dragon Festival or the “Yellowbelly Country Music Festival” plus the regular “Park Fun Run” & “Sandytown River Cruises”  – Sightseeing or Fishing as well as recreational skiing.  Birdwatching and Photography are also favourite  riverside activities for locals and visitors. On the riverfront,  the War Memorial & the St George Pilots Memorial are situated across the road from the Tourist Information Centre.

You can visit “The Unique Egg” and be amazed at Stavros’s  world renown artistic carving of the humble Emu Egg, before taking a “Cotton & Wine Tour” with on board commentary provided by local cotton growers, and finish off with lunch, entertainment and wine tasting at our local “Riversands Winery” 

The horticultural industry embraces the local climatic conditions and export industry with the growing of many fruits & vegetables – Broccoli, Garlic, Onions, Carotts, Blueberries, Melons, Citrus, Table & Wine grapes.  Agricultural industries include Cotton & Grain growing, Beef, Sheep & Wool Production.
